2015 FINALS : David & ElShorbagy still the Champs
Nicol STILL the Champion
Nicol David recorded her 55th straight win in Hong Kong as she beat Laura Massaro in straight games to retain her Hong Kong Open title, making it 11 HK titles and 80 overall!
After an intense opening game where both had chances to take the lead, David started to get on top, increased her lead and was dominant in the third.
“I was just on adrenaline today, and gave it everything I had,” said an emotional Nicol afterwards. “This is a special place and I feed of the crowd here.
“I think that was one of my best performances in quite a while. I know she’s a fighter who comes back strong but I wanted it so badly today that I think that was the difference.
“I wanted to attack from the start and just give it everything I had to get my hands on the trophy.
“If I keep playing the way I’m playing and performing well then I know titles will start to come again.”
and so is Elshorbagy …
Defending Champion and top seed Mohamed Elshorbagy made it two HK titles in a row as he ended the run of Cameron Pilley with a straight games win in the men’s final.
Pilley never managed to lead, and although he saved two match balls in the third, Shorbagy was not to be denied.
“Cameron’s had a great run, beating Simon, Nick and Greg, but I’m pleased I was able to stop him and retain this title,” said Shorbagy.
“I’m pleased with how I was able to put it all together this week and especially tonight, and pleased to finish the year on a high.
“Hong Kong is one of the biggest tournaments and titles on the tour and there are some great names on that trophy, so it’s an honour to know that my name will be on there beside them once again.
Asked if he would be back next year, the delighted champion replied “I’ll be back every year!”
